Backwater Calls

Author's Description:

(From part of the scenario's intro)

Being an adventurer isn't always glamorous. In fact, picking your jobs isn't even that free, at least if you're succesful and famous. You are approached by a special agent for the Empire. He has a job for you. He explains the basics: you are to go to a remote area known as Faerengrove and find out why the Empire hasn't heard from its iron shipments in months.

Assuming you could decline such a boring task, you say no. Then the agent explains that when the first iron shipment didn't arrive, nothing was done because it wasn't considered that important. The Empire bureaus thought the iron vein had been exhausted. But when no message indicating this possibility reached the Empire, the agents started to gather an exploration party of soldiers. Alas, Empire bureaucracy is intolerably slow. So someone decided that adventurers would be appropriate for a place like Faerengrove. You were picked because of your reputation.

The task was assigned to you. You cannot decline it. So you hear the agent out for the details of your mission. (...)

This is the best submitted BOA scenario I've played. The landmass is aesthetically pleasing. The towns each have their own unique feel. The NPCs (non-playing characters) you communicate with have real, individual dialogue. Many of them give you side quests that feel natural in respect to the role they play in the scenario. There are many challenging battles, and, if your party can't handle them, there are ways to circumvent them and continue with the scenario. The story is unique and engaging, and there are enough special items to satisfy, and yet not so many that they lose their delight.

Perhaps the strongest aspect of this scenario lies in its open-endedness. Your party can stray from the path, complete all side quests, and then do the main quest at any time. Smoo has created different ways to accomplish most quests, so you can role play more than you could in say, Canopy or Perfect Forest.

There are some grammatical errors and scripting bugs, including an altar that, when prayed at, does not bless your character, as it said it would. But, the few bugs and errors are easily overshadowed by the overall entertainment value of the scenario. It would have been neat to have a more conclusive ending, and perhaps someone in Faerengrove to whom you could report, thereby finishing the main quest without leaving the scenario. I give it 8.5/10 stars!!!

Good work, Smoo!!! We're all awaiting your next scenario!!!
